The boat was built to be simple and easily maintained.... Interior is all wood(mahagony, maple, cedar)....
Easily single-handed...
Hull is airex-cored fiberglass(approx 1 inch thick-1/2 arex, 1/2 fiberglass)
I finished building Blue Winds about 12 years ago. I spent 7 years in The Bahamas. for most of those 7 she was
sitting in a boatyard and I would take her on occasionally day or overnight trips. The last year I lived aboard.
The hull is an airex core and overbuilt....about an inch thick in most places. When I built her I added a little
over three feet to her length but kept the same sale plan. She is not a speed demon, but gets where she needs to
fast enough.... Nothing that couldn't be compensated with more sail. Most of the time I sailed her with the main
and a yankeee which as you can see from the photos is not a large sail. A larger foresail would add some speed
and a drifter or spinnaker would be great for light winds...but I never felt the driving need to purchase either
of those because she moved fast enough for me under most conditions.
If I said to myself... I want to keep her and get her into A-1 shape this is what I would do.
1. There are two places on the deck(I've covered over the teak with fiberglass) that leak and need to be replaced(This
is probably 1-2 days work and about $50 in materials, if that)...I'm going to try to estimate high rather than
low. A strange practice for someone trying to sell a boat, but I want to try to err on the side of more money and
time than less....
2.I had originally built in water tanks under the settees in the salon... Over a twelve year period they all began
to leak, so I removed them all. they now need to be replaced with flexible tanks.(1-2 days work and cost of materials
depending on how much water you want.
3. Taylor Kerosene 2 burner oven/stove needs to be cleaned and the pressure tank needs to be replaced( 1 day- $125...
or I was thinking of converting a scuba tank to use as the pressure tank which would give more capacity and be
cheaper..I have the tank)
4. Stern Platform needs to have the grating and life lines installed.(1 day- $50).
5.Hard Dodger- needs to be attached more securely as it is just bolted on....needs to be finished(is unpainted
and not trimmed out), needs the plexiglass/Lexan installed.....or it can be removed..but it was great for shelter
even without windows...
6. Hatch on stern needs to be epoxied because the wood where the hinge is bolted to has split...
8. During shipping one of the connecting links in the Cruising Design furling system bent...needs to be replaced....
9. Plaith Compass needs to be refilled...new gasket and probably cleaned...($125?)... it's a $300 compass with
a glass globe so it's worth fixing...
10. Solar vent in head leaks...recaulk...
On top of that there may be some little cosmetic jobs to do...but that's the bulk of it...
I can't see the cost of fixing everything as more than $2000-3000 plus the cost of the mast, sails and rigging
